Wedding ring
A ring exchanged at the wedding as a sign of the marriage, worn on the finger of the left or right hand.
Also: wedding band
A wedding ring is a band given at the wedding and worn as a sign of marriage. In the English-speaking world and much of Europe it is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, while in Germany, Poland, Russia, Greece and some other Orthodox countries it is worn on the right. Rings are of gold, silver, platinum or other metals. The Roman belief in a vein of love running to the fourth finger is a charming but false explanation. In some places both partners wear one, in others only the bride, and in some cultures rings are not part of the wedding at all.
