Also: shuangxi, xi, 囍
Double happiness, shuangxi, is a sign made by writing the Chinese character xi, meaning joy, twice side by side. Cut from red paper, it is pasted on doors, windows, gifts, bedrooms and invitations at a Chinese wedding, and printed on the red envelope and the tea set. It is said to have originated in a poem written by a scholar on his wedding day, but its history is uncertain. Today it is also used at other happy occasions in China and the diaspora.
