Ao dai
The long, slim tunic worn over trousers by Vietnamese brides, often red or embroidered.
Also: áo dài, Vietnamese long dress
The ao dai is a long silk tunic split at the sides and worn over wide trousers. At a Vietnamese wedding the bride and the mothers of both families wear it, and the bride's is often red, embroidered with gold dragons, phoenix or the character for double happiness, with a headdress called khan dong. The groom may wear a men's version, in a darker colour. Many couples wear a Western white dress for the reception, and the ao dai for the family rites.
