Argentine wedding
An Argentine wedding with a civil ceremony, a late dinner and a long dance party, with a box of costumes called the carioca.
Also: casamiento argentino, la carioca
In Argentina a civil marriage before the Registro Civil is the legal marriage, often held a few days before the party. The main celebration usually has a dinner, speeches, a first waltz and then a very long night of dancing, which may last until morning. At midnight or later, there is la carioca, a box of hats, masks, glasses and noisemakers handed to the guests. Argentina allowed same-sex marriage in 2010. Customs vary between Buenos Aires, the provinces and the Indigenous communities of the north.
