Pedida de mano
The Latin American custom of the groom's family visiting the bride's parents to ask formally for her hand.
Also: pedido de mano, asking for her hand
Pedida de mano, asking for the hand, is a formal visit in Spain and Latin America, in which the suitor, often with his parents, goes to the home of the bride's family to ask for her hand in marriage. Gifts of flowers or sweets are brought, and the families share a meal and agree on the engagement and often the date. In some countries, such as Colombia and Mexico, the engagement ring follows. Some families keep it as a full ceremony and others as a family lunch, and couples sometimes announce it to the parents after they have decided together.
