Brazilian wedding
A Brazilian wedding with madrinhas and padrinhos, a late ceremony, and bem-casados sweets given to guests.
Also: casamento brasileiro, bem-casado
Brazilian weddings are often held in the late afternoon or evening, with the bride arriving late by tradition, and a large party that goes on into the night. Couples choose madrinhas and padrinhos, who stand as witnesses and often sponsor part of the day. Guests are given bem-casado, a pair of small sponge cakes filled with doce de leite and joined by sugar, as a wish for a happy marriage. Civil marriage is legal and the church wedding has no legal effect unless registered. Candomble and Umbanda communities keep their own rites.
