Arras
Thirteen coins given by the groom to the bride in the Catholic wedding of Spain and Latin America.
Also: arras matrimoniales, thirteen coins
Arras are thirteen coins, blessed by the priest, which the groom gives to the bride during the wedding in Spain, Mexico, Latin America and the Philippines. They represent the groom's promise to provide and care for the family, and the bride's acceptance to look after them. The coins are kept in a small box or pouch, and carried by a child or a sponsor. The number thirteen is said to refer to Christ and the twelve apostles, though other explanations are given. The arras may be placed in the bride's hands, or poured from groom's hands.
