Aufruf
The calling up of the groom to the Torah on the Sabbath before the wedding.
Also: ufruf, aliyah for the groom
Aufruf, the German word for calling up, is the Ashkenazi custom in which the groom is called to read or bless the Torah in the synagogue on the Sabbath before his wedding. After the blessing, the congregation may sing and throw candy or nuts at him, wishing a sweet life. In many communities, the bride attends too, and families host a lunch. The Hebrew name is aliyah. In Sephardi and Mizrahi communities, the corresponding custom has other names and it is not always the Sabbath before.
