Tisch
The Ashkenazi groom's table, where friends sing and heckle him before the ceremony.
Also: chatan's tisch, kabbalat panim, groom's table
Tisch, Yiddish for table, is the gathering of the groom and his male guests before an Orthodox Ashkenazi wedding, at which he attempts to give a short teaching on a passage of the Torah while the others interrupt, sing and throw objects. The ketubah is signed at the table, in a rite called the tenaim in some communities, and the groom is escorted to the badeken. The bride sits with her own guests in a separate room, in the kabbalat panim, the receiving of the faces. Some women's groups hold a parallel gathering of song.
