Padrinos in Latin America
Sponsors who pay for or give a part of a Latin American wedding, such as the rings, the cake or the band.
Also: padrinos de velacion, padrinos de anillos
In Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Peru and the Caribbean, couples invite relatives and friends to be padrinos or madrinas for particular parts of the wedding. There may be padrinos of the rings, the arras, the lazo, the Bible, the cake, the music and the flowers. Each is expected to give or pay for their item, and to be a lifelong friend and adviser to the couple. In some countries they are also asked to be godparents to the children. The number varies, and in a modest wedding there may be just two.
