Cununia
The Romanian church wedding, in which the couple are crowned, and the word for the civil wedding too.
Also: cununie, cununia religioasa
Cununia, from cununa, a wreath or crown, is the Romanian word for the wedding ceremony. In the Orthodox church, the cununie religioasa is the rite in which the couple are crowned and walk three times around the altar table, led by the priest, with the godparents, the nasi, standing as sponsors. The civil ceremony before an official is the cununie civila, held the same day or earlier. A large feast, the nunta, follows with a band, dancing and the bride's dance. The nasi are expected to host, and have a lifelong tie to the couple.
