Stefana
The two crowns joined by a ribbon placed on the heads of the couple in a Greek Orthodox wedding.
Also: stephana, wedding crowns
The stefana are the wedding crowns of the Eastern Orthodox rite, made of leaves, flowers or metal and joined by a ribbon. During the ceremony the priest places them on the heads of the bride and groom, and the koumbaro switches them three times. The crowns show that the couple are king and queen of their new household, and they are kept at home afterwards, often in a glass case. The Orthodox crowning gives the service its name in Greek, and the Russian and Georgian rites also have crowns.
