Giving away the bride
A moment in many Western weddings when a parent walks the bride to the groom and gives her hand.
Also: walking down the aisle, giving away
In many Christian and civil weddings of the West, the bride is walked down the aisle by her father, or another relative, who hands her to the groom at the front. The practice comes from the time when a woman passed from the guardianship of her father to that of her husband, and many people, including some brides, now find that meaning outdated. Alternatives are common: both parents walk her, she walks alone, or both partners walk in with their parents. In the Church of England the question Who giveth this woman has been replaced in many services.
