Officiant

The person who leads a wedding ceremony, a priest, minister, imam, rabbi, civil celebrant or a friend with authority.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Officiant.

Also: celebrant, marriage celebrant, minister

An officiant leads the wedding ceremony. It may be a priest, minister, imam, rabbi or other religious leader, a civil celebrant, or a registrar. In the United States, many states allow a friend to be ordained online or authorised for a day to marry a couple, with rules that depend on the state. In Australia, authorised marriage celebrants are registered with the government, and humanist and independent celebrants are common in Britain, Ireland and elsewhere. Whether a ceremony is legally binding often depends on the officiant, and the couple should check local law.
