Ham
The box of gifts a Korean groom's family sends to the bride's house on the eve of the wedding.
Also: hahm, wedding box, ham box
The ham is a box, traditionally of wood, filled with a marriage letter, gifts of silk and jewellery, and sometimes red and blue cloth, sent to the bride's family before the wedding. The friends of the groom carry it, and the bearer, called a hamjinabi, shouts out to be paid, calling for the bride's family to buy it. The bride's family offers food and money, and the friends bargain, playing along. The custom has been revived with decorated boxes and is also a feature of modern weddings in the form of a gift box.
