Pyebaek
The Korean ceremony in which the new bride bows to her husband's parents and receives jujubes and chestnuts.
Also: paebaek, pyebaeg
Pyebaek is the formal greeting of the bride by the groom's parents and elder relatives, held in a room of the groom's family home or at a hall after the wedding. The couple bow, the bride offers wine and food, and the elders throw jujubes and chestnuts into her skirt, as a wish for as many children as she catches, and give advice and gifts of money. The date or jujube stands for children, and the chestnut for the continuing line. Today the ceremony is often shortened and also done for the bride's parents.
