Hwarot

The embroidered ceremonial robe of a Korean bride, with long sleeves.

A pattern drawn for this page, not a picture of Hwarot.

Also: hwalot, Korean bridal robe

The hwarot is a bright, heavily embroidered robe worn over a hanbok by a Korean bride, in red or green silk with long sleeves in contrasting stripes. It was originally a court costume, which only royal women wore, and in the Joseon period ordinary brides were allowed to wear it for their weddings as a privilege. It is now mainly seen at pyebaek, in rental dress shops and at folk reconstructions. The motifs include peonies, lotuses and cranes.

Region: East Asia
