Jooto chhupai
The game in which the bride's sisters steal the groom's shoes and ask a ransom.
Also: joota chupai, shoe stealing
During the wedding the groom takes off his shoes, and the bride's sisters and cousins hide them. At the end, he must bargain with money or gifts to have them back, and a round of friendly haggling follows, in front of everyone. It is a North Indian and Pakistani custom, and the equivalent in Bengal is joota lukano. The sum is usually small and spent on a treat, and the game is meant as a welcome into a family that likes to tease its sons-in-law.
