Khan maak
The Thai groom's procession with trays of gifts, stopped at symbolic gates.
Also: kan maak, khan mak procession
In the khan maak procession, the groom's family and friends, carrying trays of gifts, walk with music to the bride's house. Gates, held in some versions by the bride's friends with silver and gold belts, block the way until the groom pays a small sum or answers a question. The trays hold betel and areca, the sinsod, fruit and sweets, and are presented to the bride's elders. The name comes from the betel nut that stands for the trays. It is a joyful, noisy procession, a standard of Thai weddings, and sometimes shortened to a few steps.
