Sinsod
The Thai gift of money and gold from the groom's family, shown to the bride's elders before the wedding.
Also: sin sod, bride price Thai, khan maak sinsod
Sinsod, from the Thai words for the price of the bride and wealth, is the sum of money and gold that the groom's family gives to the bride's parents as a gift of thanks and a sign of seriousness. The amount is negotiated through elders and presented in the engagement or procession, often with a tray, and in many families is returned in part to the couple. It is not a purchase, in the account of Thai families who keep it, but a recognition of the cost of bringing up a daughter. Spelling varies as sinsod, sin sod and sinsot.
