Kiz isteme
The Turkish visit where the groom's family asks for the bride, and the bride serves salty coffee.
Also: kız isteme, asking for the girl, Turkish proposal visit
Kiz isteme, asking for the girl, is the formal visit of the groom and his family to the bride's home to ask her parents for her hand. The bride serves Turkish coffee to the guests, and by long custom, serves the groom's cup with salt in place of sugar, to see if he takes it with good humour. The elders talk, and if the answer is yes, a date for the engagement, nisan, is set. It is still widely observed, including in cities, often as a light-hearted family occasion.
