Kina gecesi
The Turkish henna night, with songs of farewell sung to the weeping bride.
Also: kına gecesi, Turkish henna night
Kina gecesi is the evening before a Turkish wedding in which the bride's hands are painted with henna by the groom's mother or an older woman, in a ceremony led by a married woman. The bride wears a red veil, bindalli, and her friends sing sad songs, kina turkuleri, that traditionally make her cry, since she is leaving her family. A coin is placed in her palm before the henna and the groom's family also holds a henna night. In the cities, many couples hold it in a hall with a band, and some skip the weeping.
