Log sawing
A German and Swiss custom in which the couple saw a log in two together as their first task.
Also: Baumstamm sagen, Baumstamm sägen
Log sawing, Baumstammsagen in German, is a custom in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in which the newlyweds, after the ceremony, are asked to saw a log in two with a two-handed saw, in front of the guests. It shows that the couple can work together as a team, and the pieces may be kept. Friends may add tricks, such as a blunt saw. It is an example of the play that surrounds the German wedding, along with the bride theft and the polterabend.
