Negafa
The Moroccan woman who dresses the bride and manages her appearances through the wedding night.
Also: neggafa, nggafa, negafah
A negafa is a woman who, for a fee, dresses the bride, does her make-up and jewellery and directs her entries at a Moroccan wedding, bringing her out in several traditional outfits in turn, such as the takchita, the kaftan and a Fassi, Berber or Saharan gown, each with its own ornaments. The negafa also sets up the amariya and organises the order of the evening. Her team of assistants carries the dresses. The title is spelled negafa, neggafa or nggafa, and a Tunisian and Algerian equivalent exists under other names.
