Ngoma
A Bantu word for drum, and for the songs, drum music and dance that accompany a wedding.
Also: ingoma, ngoma dance
Ngoma, in many Bantu languages from Kenya to South Africa, means drum, and also the whole event of drumming, song and dance. At weddings in Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa, groups of women and men dance and sing in turn, praise the families and tease the couple. Zulu wedding groups perform ingoma with high kicks and call-and-response, and a wedding procession may be led by a drum. The word has many shades, and in some places it also names healing rites.
