Ululation
The high, trilling cry of women across Africa and beyond that marks joy at a wedding.
Also: trilling, kuhlaba
Ululation is a loud, high-pitched trill made by moving the tongue rapidly, used by women in many African and Middle Eastern communities to greet a bride, welcome guests or express joy. At weddings in West, East and Southern Africa it may begin when the bride appears, when the families meet or when the groom's party arrives. Words for it vary: zaghareet in Arabic, kigelegele in Kinyarwanda, and others. It is part of the sound of a wedding for those who grew up with it.
