Subho drishti
The Bengali moment when the bride and groom first look at each other, hidden behind betel leaves.
Also: shubho drishti, shubh drishti, auspicious glance
At a Bengali Hindu wedding, the bride is carried or led seven times around the groom on a low wooden stool, called a pidi, her face covered with betel leaves. Then the leaves are lowered, and the couple see each other for the first time as bride and groom. This is subho drishti, the auspicious look. The guests ululate, with the uludhwani and blow conch shells. Spelling varies as subho, shubho or shubh.
