Panggih
The Javanese meeting of the bride and groom, with rituals of throwing betel and breaking an egg.

Panggih, also called temu manten, is the moment in a Javanese wedding when the bride and groom first meet after the nikah or marriage contract. They throw packets of betel leaves, gantal, at each other, the groom steps on an egg to break it and the bride washes his feet with flower water, which stands for respect and the hope of children. Their little fingers are linked, and they walk together to a seat of honour. It follows the siraman and is accompanied by gamelan, the instrument ensemble of Java.
