Roma wedding
A wedding among the Roma of Europe, with customs that differ widely between groups and countries.
Also: Romani wedding, Gypsy wedding
The Roma are a diverse people, and no single wedding custom speaks for them all. Many Roma weddings are large family occasions, with music, a feast and a public display of the bride's dress and gold, and in some communities a celebration lasts days. Some groups have traditions of arranged marriages and bride price, and in some communities girls marry very young. Child and early marriage is illegal in all European Union countries and is a human-rights concern, and many Roma organisations work against it. Roma people also marry in civil and church ceremonies like their neighbours. The word Gypsy is considered an insult by many, so Roma or Romani is preferred.
