Rukhsati
The farewell at which a Muslim bride leaves her parents' home with her husband.
Also: rukhsat, ruksati, ruksat
Rukhsati is the sending off of the bride in Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi Muslim weddings. After the nikah and the main feast, the bride's family bless her and she is escorted to the groom's car, often with a Quran held over her head and an elder reciting a prayer. Her father or brother may lead her. Parents, sisters and friends cry, and sad songs may be sung. The word rukhsat means leave or permission, and in many families the rukhsati is held on the same day as the nikah.
