Tenaim
The Jewish betrothal agreement, in which the families state the conditions and a plate is broken.
Also: tna'im, tnaim, conditions
Tenaim, Hebrew for conditions, is the formal engagement of Orthodox Jews, at which the two families sign a document that states the date of the wedding and the obligations of each side, which often includes the wedding costs and support for the couple. At the close of the reading, the mothers break a plate, to remember the destruction of the Temple even at a joyful moment. It is held a few weeks or months before the wedding, or in some communities on the day itself, at the tisch. The spelling varies as tenaim and tnaim.
