Toast
Raising a glass to wish the couple well, usually after speeches from the families and the best man.
Also: speeches, toasting
A toast is a short speech that ends with the guests raising their glasses and drinking to the health of the couple. In English-speaking countries, the order is usually the father of the bride, the groom and the best man, and sometimes the bride and maid of honour. In Georgia and the Caucasus a toastmaster, the tamada, directs a long series of toasts, and Sweden has toastmasters too. A toast is also a way to thank guests and families. Customs include clinking glasses, shouting a word such as cheers, salud or na zdorovie, and the kiss.
