Yichud
The few minutes of privacy the Jewish couple spend alone together right after the ceremony.
Also: yihud, seclusion, cheder yichud
Yichud, Hebrew for seclusion, is the short period after the chuppah, usually fifteen to twenty minutes, when the couple are taken to a private room and left alone for the first time as husband and wife. They often break their fast together there, since many keep a fast on their wedding day, and have a first meal, which may be soup or a favourite dish. It completes the marriage in traditional law. Many couples treasure it as a pause in a day of attention. The spelling varies as yichud or yihud.
