San-san-kudo

The Japanese Shinto exchange of three cups of sake, three sips each, between the couple.

Also: sansankudo, three three nine times

San-san-kudo, three three nine times, is the central cup exchange of a Shinto wedding in Japan. A miko, a shrine maiden, pours sake into three flat cups of increasing size, and the couple take three sips from each, in turn, nine sips in all. The numbers are lucky ones. The groom drinks first from the first cup, the bride from the second, and then the groom again. It is the moment that links the couple and is carried out in front of the priest and the families at the shrine.
