Zaghrouta
The high trilling cry made by women at an Arab wedding to mark joy.
Also: zaghareed, zaghareet, ululation, zagharit
The zaghrouta is a loud, high-pitched, trilling sound made by women, with the tongue moving rapidly from side to side, at weddings, births and celebrations across the Arab world and beyond. In Egypt it is zaghroota, in the Levant zaghareed, and it is heard in many other countries under other names. At a wedding it is made as the bride arrives, when the couple enter, and during the dancing. Women of all ages join, and the sound carries over the music.
