Also: koumbaros, kumbaro, koumbara

The koumbaro (male) or koumbara (female) is the best man or sponsor at a Greek Orthodox wedding. He or she pays for or provides the candles, the crowns or the rings, and in the ceremony exchanges the crowns three times over the heads of the couple. The role is a lifelong bond: the koumbaro often later baptises the couple's first child. The word is related to the Italian compare and the Slavic kum. Variants of the spelling include koumbaros.
