Shiromuku
The pure white kimono worn by a Japanese bride at a Shinto wedding.
Also: white kimono, white robe
Shiromuku is a white kimono of silk, worn with a white hood, tsunokakushi, or a wig and a covering, wataboshi, by a bride at a traditional Shinto wedding. White is the colour of purity and the starting point for a new life in the groom's family. The tsunokakushi, meaning horn hider, is said to cover the bride's jealousy or ego, though its origins are more probably practical. After the ceremony a bride may change into a coloured kimono for the reception.
