Uchikake
The heavily embroidered outer robe, red or white, that a Japanese bride wears over her kimono.
Also: uchikake robe, red wedding kimono
The uchikake is a long, padded outer robe, often red or white and richly embroidered with cranes, pines, bamboo and plum blossom, worn open over a kimono without a belt by a bride at her wedding or reception. The motifs stand for long life, luck and fidelity. It was originally worn by women of the samurai class. Many brides now rent an uchikake rather than buy, and wear it with a shiromuku, or on its own for the reception.
