Wedding traditions of Djerba

An island where Muslim, Berber and Jewish communities have lived side by side, and weddings have long been shared.

Djerba has Arab, Berber and ancient Jewish communities. The El Ghriba Synagogue is a pilgrimage site, and the Jewish quarter, Hara Kebira, has a small community that still marries within its own rites. Muslim Djerbans keep local jewellery and the pottery of Guellala for gifts.

A wedding here

In a Jewish wedding the ketubah is read under the chuppah and a glass is broken. Songs in Judeo-Arabic and the henna night, known among North African Jews, are kept. A Muslim wedding has a similar henna night, with the bride's hands painted and gold gifts.

The season and the calendar

Tourism is a main summer income; weddings are scheduled around the seasons of the olive and date harvests, and around Lag BaOmer, when the Ghriba pilgrimage is held.
