Wedding traditions of Imilchil
A High Atlas village known for the Imilchil Marriage Festival of the Ait Haddidou.
Imilchil lies in the High Atlas at about 2,100 metres, among the Ait Haddidou Berbers. An old story tells of two lovers, Isli and Tislit, whose tears made two lakes, and the annual moussem is said to be a place where marriages are made. Today it is chiefly a harvest and cultural fair held in September.

A moussem here
Families, traders and visitors gather in tents for a market, music and the ahidous dance. Some local couples still announce engagements at the event, and women wear their finest striped cloaks and silver jewellery. In older custom a woman chose her partner and a legal officer registered it.
What it is now
Many locals say the event is mostly a cultural festival and that marriages are arranged in the usual way. The date is set by the community and the authorities each year.
