Wedding traditions of Kano

An old Hausa trading city with henna, a dowry of goods and mass weddings sponsored by the state.

Kano is the centre of Hausa culture and Islamic life in northern Nigeria. A Hausa wedding has the sadaki, the mahr, the fatiha, and the kunshi, a henna ceremony for the bride. Kayan daki, a bride's household goods, are sent to the groom's house with fanfare.

A wedding here

The bride's hands and feet are decorated with lalle, black henna, and she is kept in seclusion. A procession brings the bride's goods to her new home, and the drums are played by a hired group. Women sing wedding songs and share a meal of rice, tuwo and soup.

Law and change

The Hisbah board in Kano has organised mass weddings of several hundred couples, with the aim of helping the poor marry. Child marriage is a known issue in the north, and Nigeria's Child Rights Act, which sets 18 as the age of adulthood, has not been adopted as law in Kano State, so activists continue to press for change.
