Wedding traditions of Reykjavik

Iceland weddings come with glacier backdrops, small ceremonies and the old custom of handfasting.

Iceland has a strong tradition of informal, small weddings. Legal same-sex marriage dates from 2010. Many couples marry in a church or outdoors, and the Icelandic law allows a wide range of celebrants.

A wedding here

A civil marriage can be held at the district commissioner or in a church. Couples sometimes marry among lava fields or by a waterfall.

Customs

Weddings include speeches and songs, and a traditional dish such as lamb. The ring may be worn on the right hand in some Nordic customs.
