Wedding traditions of Kochi

A Kerala port city where Hindu, Syrian Christian, Muslim and Jewish weddings have lived together for centuries.

Kochi has one of the oldest mixed communities in India. Hindu weddings are short and simple, Syrian Christian weddings have a strong church liturgy and a notable minnu pendant, and Mappila Muslim weddings have their own music and food.

A wedding here

A Kerala Hindu wedding is brief. The groom ties the thali, the couple exchange garlands and the bride's father places her hand in the groom's, all in a few minutes before a lamp. A Syrian Christian groom ties the minnu, a gold pendant on a thread, in the church. A Mappila wedding includes oppana, a group song with hand-clapping by women.

Where weddings happen

Temples, churches, auditoriums and large halls across Ernakulam. Guruvayur temple is a short drive north and is the favourite choice for Hindu weddings.

The season and the calendar

Hindu families look for auspicious dates in the Malayalam calendar, and avoid Karkidakam in July and August. Christian weddings avoid Lent. Many weddings take place in the months from December to May.

Also part of it, and being written: Kerala Hindu wedding (A short wedding in front of a lamp.), Minnu (The Syrian Christian wedding pendant.), Sadya (The banana-leaf feast.), Syrian Christians of Kerala (The community with a long church tradition.).
