Wedding traditions of Kuala Lumpur

Malay, Chinese and Indian weddings share one city, from the bersanding throne to the tea ceremony and the Tamil thali.

Malaysia has three main wedding traditions living side by side. Malay Muslim weddings centre on the akad nikah and the bersanding, Chinese weddings on the tea ceremony and the banquet, and Indian weddings on the Hindu rites.

A wedding here

In a Malay wedding the groom gives the hantaran, a set of decorated gift trays, and the couple sit on a dais in the bersanding, being sprinkled with scented rice and flowers by elders. Guests receive a small gift called a bunga telur, an egg in a flower cup. A Chinese wedding has the door games and the tea ceremony, then a banquet of eight or nine dishes.

Where weddings happen

Hotels, halls and kenduri tents at the family home. Muslim marriages are registered by the state religious departments, while civil marriage follows the Law Reform Act for non-Muslims.

The season and the calendar

Weddings are held year-round. Malay couples avoid Ramadan and often marry in the months after Eid, and Chinese families avoid the seventh lunar month.
